Everything about pedelecs / e-bikes
More and more often you can see bicycles with support from an electric motor. The development has progressed so rapidly that these great runabouts have now become a real alternative to the car in the big cities.
Because the dilemma is well known. While you'd like to replace your car with the eco-friendly and healthy bicycle, you don't want to sweat too much, especially if you're using it to get to work. After all, you have to look presentable and above all professional, and you don't want to annoy your employees, colleagues and customers with the smell of sweat.
With an electric bike - also called a pedelec or e-bike - you can firstly cover longer distances, as you don't have to pedal yourself, and you can get help, especially on inclines. So you arrive rested and fresh at your destination. And even people with physical disabilities can go on tour again with motor assistance.
With a practical electric bike, rush hour traffic and congestion are a thing of the past.
Curious now? Here we show you what is important for the E-Buke!
Electric bike types
Electric bicycles are commonly divided into three classes. Of these, only one is legally considered a normal bicycle. Unfortunately, confusion often arises due to the various designations, all of which are not yet fully defined.
In principle, electric bike or electric bicycle is the generic term for bicycles with electric motor assistance. The following categories have been established:
Pedelec The pedelec (pedal electric cycle) has an electric motor of max. 250 watts and supports the rider with this while pedalling. It reaches a maximum speed of 25 km/h. If you want to ride faster, this depends solely on your own physical performance. For an average cyclist, this power is about 100 watts. How much assistance you want can be set in several stages. This then depends on the pedal power or the cadence of the rider. The definition of a pedelec is derived from section 1 paragraph 3 of the Road Traffic Act, which makes it legally equivalent to a bicycle. For this reason, you do not need an insurance plate, a registration or a driver's license. There is no helmet obligation or age restriction for the use of the pedelec. However, the term has not become established in most people's vernacular. Most people speak of e-bikes, which is actually a different class of vehicle. The pedelec accounts for over 90 percent of the market.
Fast pedelecs / S-class The so-called fast pedelecs, which are often also referred to as Swiss class or S-class, no longer belong to the bicycles, but are rather classified as mopeds. In principle, these electric bicycles also function like a pedelec, but the motor assistance does not switch off until a speed of 45 km/h is reached. In this class, a maximum rated continuous motor power of 500 watts is currently permitted.

How much does an E Bike cost?

⎫ Use of this fast class requires an operating permit or individual approval from the manufacturer from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). In addition, an insurance license plate is required for this fast electric bike (the costs are around 70 euros per year). The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI) considers 45 km/h to be the maximum design speed. Therefore, the rider must be at least 16 years old and must have a class AM driving licence. Wearing a protective helmet is also mandatory, although this is not described in detail. It is therefore safe to assume that a good bicycle helmet will satisfy the regulation. However, some helmet manufacturers now offer special helmets that meet the motorcycle standard but are much lighter and better ventilated. They therefore offer a high level of safety and are clearly more comfortable to wear.By the way, you are not allowed to ride a fast pedelec on cycle paths, even if these may be open to mopeds.
⎫ E-bikes in the narrower sense The third category is e-bikes (be careful, the name is often used incorrectly, as already described). They are more like electric mopeds, because you can ride them without having to pedal yourself, thanks to the electric drive. The drive is operated by a rotary knob or shift knob. If the engine power of 500 watts and a maximum speed of 20 km/h are not exceeded, these vehicles are then considered to be mopeds. Here, too, an insurance plate, an operating licence and at least a moped driving licence are required to ride. If you want to go faster than 20 km/h, you have to pedal yourself. A helmet obligation does not exist here because of the low speed. Of the three categories described above, this is the least important on the market, as it has only a very small share.
Conclusion on the electric bike
